About Me
My name is Denise O'Connor and I am a Ceramic Artist from North Cork.
I am a graduate from Limerick School of Art and Design with an Honours Degree in Ceramic Design.
Having grown up on the family farm, dogs have always been a part of our family and life would not be quite the same without my dog Ruby. She suffers from a respiratory inherited disorder caused by inbreeding.
A ceramic Staffordshire flatback, a family heirloom became the basis for my work. The beauty of these creatures is apparent, however, through the ceramic process, something darker is revealed and the fragility of the dogs exposed.
My work is intended to be unsettling and challenging to the viewer. Porcelain is my choice of clay as it represents the fragility of the health of the dogs, while multiples are used to highlight the scale of the problem. The link between the domestic dog and the ceramic staffordshire dog is traditional as well as personal.
